    Bear Attack!

    Woke up this morning to my hive listing to its side.  A bear must have come along and tried to knock over the hive and get at the honey.  Really all it did was wedge the hive up between the stand and the fence and the pissed off bees drove the bear away. Time to set up the electric fence it looks like.   So I put on my beekeeper suit and headed on down to the hive and put it back together.  I didn’t use any smoke so I had quite a few pissed off bees coming at me.  Didn’t take too long and had it all back together. …

    The Bees are in their New Home!

    The adoption went through and I’m the proud father of roughly 3000 new girls and a few boys in there for good measure. I donned my bee suit, grabbed the package of bees from the post office and gently (meaning dumped) placed them into their new home.     I added the queen cage Removed the cork on the candy side and placed her between two frames. Closed them up… Added the sugar water, placed the entrance reducer, and they’re good to go! I was a little slow getting this update online, but it’s been a few days and it’s time for me to open up the hive and remove…

    Beehive Ready for New Bees

    I received notification that my new package of bees should be coming in the next day or two. Most likely tomorrow, so I needed to get the hive ready for the new residents at the Brown Household. I have the two-tone set up because on top I installed a simple feeder that I can easily remove and get at: Sugar to water ratio needs to be 1:1 while feeding. Since my maple syrup days, I have been using mostly maple sugar or syrup instead of plain cane sugar. I’ll have to hit the store for some cane sugar and get a good dose of sugar water ready for the bees.…
