The horse shoe pits that I put together some time ago, have been a big hit in the neighborhood on Thursday nights. I can’t say any of us are that good or even keep track of scores, but it has been a great excuse to get together and enjoy each other’s company in this time when most people are stuck at home.
As the summer is winding down, darkness is descending earlier. So we find ourselves on my deck earlier and earlier. The prior week we decided to forgo the entire horse show throwing charade and just met up at the deck for drinks and food!
And of course Cigars!!!
It isn’t the horse shoes. So don’t feel the need to run out and make a couple of pits if that isn’t your thing. It is just an excuse to get together and sometimes any excuse will do. Winter we get together for curling and it is hugely popular. We have fun, make fun of each other, have a few drinks, catch up on what is happening and do it again the next week.
Part of an odd coincidence which helps make this work, almost none of us have a facebook account. We use phone texting groups to coordinate and since we haven’t been posting and watching what each has been up to during the week, we truly have things to talk about and listen to other’s adventures.
When I became a Mason, there was a saying that said: You get out what you put in.
It took me a long time to understand that saying. You could also quote the movie Field of Dreams and say it this way: If you build it, they will come.
Don’t wait for something to happen, you make it happen. You will have just as much fun. The outing can be anything. Any excuse really to just get people together. A bike ride, a trip, dinner, or even a horse shoe pit. The choice is yours.
