This is a photo of my dog Penny, the day after her surgery. She had an enlarged and cancerous spleen. There was no guarantee if the cancer had spread. She wasn’t eating. The options were to have her put down, or try for a surgery where a good outcome with slim.
We knew there was no choice but to go for the surgery. We were told the risks since she is almost 14 years in age and signed the DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) if something went wrong during surgery.
We got a call that afternoon that it was a success, the spleen looked ready to rupture and was removed and the rest of the organs were checked with no visible cancer.
They are giving us a 6 month to 12 month time frame. Might have been more cancer that couldn’t be seen. Now there is no spleen, and frankly due to her age I’m not surprised.
But that is one happy happy dog sleeping on our front lawn and soaking up the sun.
If the opposite outcome happened, I would have still taken the risk. Our pets touch our lives in so many ways, it was the least I could do for her. Happy to still have my dog. She might be a little bit slower and hard of hearing now, but watching her enjoy the grass and just watch the cars go by and enjoy what is left makes me know that I did the right thing.
